Peace Building and Civic Leadership

Democracy and governance issues are at the forefront of our work with government, local leaderships, and cultural institutions. We seek to promote transparency, accountability, good policy and dialogue within these organizations through information sharing, research and networking.
We believe using listening-based dialog to collaboratively identify options and inform choices is key to the survival of communities and countries in current times. Our work will be carried out in collaboration with other stakeholders like CSOs, regional bodies like IGAD, international agencies on human rights, and democracy monitoring groups.
In an effort to promote the rule of law, PLAVIO – Uganda is working towards creating and sustaining a Criminal Justice and Rule of Law program to facilitate dialogue between police and communities.
This dialogues helps explore threats, community needs, and the perspective of police in order to promote cooperation in responding to security challenges and bridging the gap between policy and practice. This approach to programming aims at combining analytical rigor, practical experience, context sensitivity, and inclusive stakeholder engagement to support locally owned policies and practices in justice and security.
Through a range of multidisciplinary capacity development initiatives, PLAVIO- Uganda aims to foster collaborative working relationships across a vast network of policy makers, scholar-practitioners, governments, intergovernmental organizations, and civil society experts.
By expanding its in-house training expertise, PLAVIO – Uganda works to establish itself as a provider of innovative and accessible practitioner learning and guidance materials. The organization’s contributions to strategic policy is to position PLAVIO – Uganda as a trusted facilitator of dialogue and policy development on a regional and national scale.

Community Development
Health is a complex issue for the sub-Saharan population, yet listening at the individual and community level can help bring change. For example, many mothers do not go to the hospital for antenatal and postnatal care.
We believe one underlying cause of this problem, which results in many maternal and infant deaths, is that the mothers’ concerns have not been listened to. Often, messages are passed to communities in ways that ignore their culture and concerns. Only when government and health officials pay attention to the people will any program be successful. PLAVIO – Uganda works to spearhead a Community Health initiative that provides a forum for listening before acting in a health context. We believe this encourages behavior change and addresses complex issues like child health, infant and maternal mortality, STDs and reproductive health
Economic inequality and poverty, while stemming from many factors, can be improved at a household level by encouraging cooperation between family members. Households can become unstable when family members do not listen to each other, leading eventually to mismanagement or loss of financial assets. When family members stay faithful, united and respectful, with all taking their positions and responsibilities seriously, we can expect an increase in peace, health, and income. When more families are stable and prosperous, the entire country and East African region can ensure sustained peace, security of peoples and properties thereby becoming prosperous
Education is a key area where listening is critical. When schools conduct themselves according to listening centered principles, they are more likely to be peaceful and productive environments for both students and staff. Furthermore, when listening-focused messages are interwoven into curriculum and teaching style, students become better community members as part of their education. PLAVIO – Uganda, through its affiliation with Keframa High School, has given hundreds of students the opportunity for formal secondary education through a sponsorship scheme supported by international friends and organizations in the UK and USA.

Ministry and Discipleship
The Plavio Uganda Ministry and Discipleship Project is a chronological Bible study that shows how all Scripture points us to Jesus. What we’re trying to do with this Bible study is to help people of all ages see how the Bible fits together to tell one big story—God’s plan to rescue and redeem sinners through faith in Jesus Christ.
Using storytelling as a method to share the Gospel is not only effective but also culturally relevant, especially in regions where oral tradition is strong. It ensures accessibility to people of all ages and backgrounds, allowing them to easily grasp the message of Jesus Christ directly from the Bible. By adapting such a program to the local environment and culture, it becomes even more impactful.
